Matthew Lillard has some theories on his Scream character Stu Macher. Lillard recently shared his theory that Macher is “definitely alive.” Just before heading off to film Five Nights At Freddy's 2, Lillard joined us for an interview to discuss his new Macabre Spirits tequila and collaboration with Mike Flanagan. He also went into more detail on his Scream theories for Stu Macher โ what's Stu been up to? What's his five-year plan? That sort of thing.
“Yeah, he gets stabbed multiple times. The TV falls on his head, and yes, that hurts, and he's completely scarred. His entire face is mangled, but he's doing his time in jail, and he's about at the end of his sentence. It's like the Menendez brothers. He's going to get retried, and he's going to get out of prison. He, of course, is in his Cape Fear, De Niro sort of mode. So he's shredded and completely steroided out, covered in tattoos from prison, and he comes back to seek revenge on Sidney. He's all jacked.”
Ok, we're into it. Lillard, as a completely Freddy Krueger-faced, yolked-out, tatted-up prison Stu. Does Lillard have any favorite fan theories on how Stu Macher might return to wreak havoc on Woodsboro and Sidney once again?
“Not really. I mean, that's not how I do it. I do not spend my days thinking about it. I am definitely on Reddit a lot. I am not on the Matthew Lillard fan fiction subreddit. The internet is a magical and freaky place.”
We saw the return of Billy Loomis in Radio Silence's Scream (2022). What about a Stu and Ghost Billy reunion? Could that ever be in the cards? “Look, they brought Billy back. How do you not bring Stu back? I mean, come on.”
Since Billy appeared as a full-on ghost in the Scream reboot, some logistical questions have been raised. Would Stu Macher's return mean we get to see Billy and Stu on screen together? Is Stu able to see Ghost Billy? Can they communicate? Is this like an Obi-Wan Kenobi and Yoda situation?
Lillard, of course, has an interesting direction for it: “That's the last image of the entire franchise.[Stu and Billy] just holding hands, the first two Husbands of Horror in the next realm.”
So, has Lillard read any of the script for Scream VII or talked to anyone involved? “I did talk to Neve for a second. I know she's excited about this story, but that's all I know. Yeah, I'm in the family. I'm not in the war room.”
So you're saying there's a chance? Ok, so it sounds unlikely but not impossible. And Lillard's theory about Stu Macher stashed away in a prison cell, plotting for his revenge on Sidney Prescott, could actually work. I mean, much stranger things have happened, right? If we can get a Ghost Billy, we can most certainly get a Prison Stu.
