Japanese film studio Toho might be best known for introducing Godzilla to the world, but that’s not all they’ve got up their sleeve. Today, Deadline revealed the first images from their upcoming sci-fi thriller Leviathan, which sends a group of students to space without the supplies needed to survive.

Based on the popular manga of the same name by Shiro Kuroi, Leviathan is directed by Michihito Fujii and Ryohei Shingu, with Fujii writing the script alongside Izumi Takahashi. Starring Shunsuke Michieda and Natsuki Deguchi, the film’s synopsis (per Deadline) is as follows:

Set in 2127, the film follows a group of students pitted against each other in a brutal battle for survival in the depths of space after a catastrophic accident leaves the spacecraft they are traveling in adrift and low on oxygen, and with only one life support.

Leviathan was originally serialized on the digital manga site Shonen Jump+ in 2022, before being translated to English in 2024 by Montana Kane. The film adaptation joins a host of other projects currently being developed by Toho, most notably the sequel Godzilla Minus Zero, which arrives in American theaters this week. Also in the works is Godzilla x Kong: Supernova, the latest in a line of kaiju films co-produced by Legendary Pictures, which arrives in theaters early next year.

Leviathan premieres in Japanese theaters on February 11, 2027. Stay tuned to FANGORIA for more updates.
