J-horror mainstay Takashi Shimizu (Ju-on: The Grudge, Reincarnation, the Village Trilogy) returns with his latest tale of terror Village of Eight Gravestones, hitting Japanese theaters on September 18, with a U.S. release date to be announced.
Following its premiere at Fantasia International Film Festival earlier this month (one of two new Shimizu offerings alongside The Mouths), Village of Eight Gravestones recently got a creepy new trailer. While it doesn't yet have English subtitles, in true mysterious trailer form, nothing much is said except an ominous count to eight, the film's title, and a pained scream. Check it out below:
Based on the 1949 novel of the same name by famed Japanese mystery writer Seishi Yokomizo, who was credited with creating Japan's answer to Sherlock Holmes, fictional detective Kosuke Kindaichi, Village of Eight Gravestones follows a young man with a dark family past who visits the village of his late mother and encounters a private eye hired by hostile villagers as a killing spree unfolds.
Matsuya Onoe (Demon City) stars as Detective Kindaichi, with Tomoya Oku (Kamen Rider Revice) and Mayu Hotta (The Forbidden Play) also starring.
Shimizu's Village of Eight Gravestones marks the third feature adaptation of Yokomizo's novel following Yoshitaro Nomura's version in 1977, and a 1996 take from Kon Ichikawa, whose other Kosuke Kindaichi adaptations included The Inugami Family (hugely recommended, and with a brand new release from Radiance Films coming soon), The Devil's Ballad, and Island of Horrors.
