The trend of new and not-so-new films joining the top horror movies on streaming this week hasn’t stopped yet.  If anything, there are a variety of films on a variety of subjects, some with somewhat familiar premises, like They Will Kill You, and others that are reboots of an already established franchise, like Return to Silent Hill and Scream 7. Return to Silent Hill, which is also the return of the director of the original Silent Hill, Christophe Gans, was originally set to stream only on Screambox, but was added to Hulu and Disney+ on June 12.

The older films joining the top horror movies on streaming this week are surprising ones. Barbet Schroeder’s Single White Female, from 1992, is the first to emerge into the top ten. The fifth film in the Underworld saga of vamps and werewolves fighting for supremacy, Underworld: Blood Wars, has fought with fangs and claws for its place on the list. 2025 faves like Weapons and The Long Walk have retained their spots for this week as well.

This bloody and gruesome tale, that comes with its own roving eyeball, has a frenetic energy and lots of hand-to-hand combat. It was produced by Andy Muschietti, the director of It and It Chapter 2.

Holding steady for the second week, Keeper keeps its spot again with its combination of folk horror and madness starring Tatiana Maslany, Rossif Sutherland, Birkett Turton, and Eden Weiss. It was directed by Osgood Perkins and written by Nick Lepard (Dangerous Animals).

Hideo Kojima, the Japanese video game designer, film fan, and writer and director, described Perkins as “the Wizard of Horror” in a reaction to the film. With Keeper, Perkins turns his talents towards examining relationships and the trust required of romantic partners in his own unique way.

Keeper is now streaming on Hulu.

In a blast from the past, 1992’s Single White Female comes to the top ten list for the first time after being added to Netflix. It is another example of a streamer with a wide audience lifting a horror film back into prominence, in this case, after thirty-four years.

The movie is a cautionary tale about choosing roommates from among a group of people you don’t know, which is a fear a lot of people can relate to. Written by Don Roos, who also wrote the 1996 remake of Diabolique,  and directed by Barbet Schroeder (Murder by Numbers), it stars Bridget Fonda (Lake Placid), Steven Weber (Dracula: Dead and Loving It, The Shining (1997),  and Jennifer Jason Leigh (Eyes of a Stranger, Possessor).

Single White Female is now streaming on Netflix.

The third movie in the Silent Hill franchise, which is based on the Konami video game series, Return to Silent Hill, was released in theaters in January 2026. French director Christophe Gans (Brotherhood of the Wolf) has returned to reboot the series after 2012’s Silent Hill: Revelation. The new film is based, somewhat loosely, on the video game Silent Hill 2. It stars Jeremy Irvine and Hannah Emily Anderson.

The film, released by Cineverse, tells the story of artist James Sunderland, who goes back to Silent Hill and finds it much changed and abandoned after receiving a letter from his lost love. Originally, it was announced to be released only on Screambox, but Hulu and Disney+ added it on June 16.

Return to Silent Hill is now streaming on Disney+,  Hulu, and Screambox.

Sidney Evans, nee Prescott, is back in the action in the seventh Scream movie.  Like Scream VI, the action of the film is transferred to a different setting, in this case, Pine Grove, Indiana, where Sidney has married the local sheriff and raised a family in relative safety.  That safety comes to an end, again, after another Ghostface killing takes place in Stu Macher’s abandoned family home, and Ghostface challenges Sidney to another slasher duel with the life of her daughter, Tatum, as the ultimate prize.

The newest film has a large cast, including living and dead characters from the series: Neve Campbell, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Mason Gooding, David Arquette, Matthew Lillard, and Courteney Cox, are the returning characters, with Isabel May, Anna Camp, Michelle Randolph, Jimmy Tatro, Mckenna Grace, Asa Germann, Celeste O’Connor, Sam Rechner, Mark Consuelos, Tim Simons, and Joel McHale as new additions to the cast.

Scream 7 is now streaming on Paramount+.

Writer, director, and actor Maggie Gyllenhaal wanted to tell a different story from most of the adaptations of the classic novel, Frankenstein, by Mary Shelley. In the film, The Bride!, or Ida, as she was known in life, comes back to life and tries to reclaim her identity and her destiny with Frank, the other former corpse, who was reanimated by Dr. Cornelia Euphronius.  The same villain that sought to silence The Bride! while she was alive,  dispatches a killer to destroy her once and for all.

Jessie Buckley, who plays The Bride! and Mary Shelley, Christian Bale, Peter Sarsgaard, Annette Bening, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Penélope Cruz star in the film, which is a heady mix of  1936 Chicago, dance numbers, murder, and cinema fandom.  It’s not what you would expect from a monster movie, but that is all the more exciting, as Gyllenhaal opens up the subgenre with different ideas and a branching of the classic creation myth.
The Bride! is now streaming on HBO Max!

A film that was shot in chronological order, unlike most movies, which are not, gives the cast and the audience the chance to experience the events in the film as they happen in the script. The Long Walk is one of those rare movies, as director Francis Lawrence crafted the film from the script written by JT Mollner. Shooting the script in order gave the actors the experience of walking together and bonding as fellow competitors and enemies, as well as losing their comrades along the way.

It took a group of actors, Cooper Hoffman, David Jonsson, Garrett Wareing, Tut Nyuot, Joshua Odjick, Charlie Plummer, Ben Wang, Roman Griffin Davis, and Josh Hamilton, and got them to experience what a contest like The Long Walk might really be like, as the director had the actors walk just like the characters.  When there was a new take or a new scene, the actors had to trudge again on the road, even if they were tired.

Judy Greer and Mark Hamill also star in the film, as Ray Garrity’s mother and The Major, the military dictator who rules over a cruel alternate 1970s United States.

The Long Walk is now streaming on Starz.

The character of Aunt Gladys was the most important role to cast, according to writer and director Zach Cregger, in an article in The Hollywood Reporter. We think that most fans of the movie would agree. While Gladys is a character who embraces the dark side, you can’t help but feel sympathy for her, even with or perhaps because of her flamboyant make-up, hair, and clothing choices.

Among the cast, Josh Brolin, Julia Garner, Alden Ehrenreich, Austin Abrams, Cary Christopher, Toby Huss, and Benedict Wong, Madigan’s Gladys fits in with an array of characters who are far from perfect, but are always authentically human with all the flaws and yearnings that we all have.

Weapons is now streaming on HBO Max and Prime.

  • Jaws - Streaming on Starz

Steven Spielberg, one of cinema’s most beloved directors, directed Jaws as his third feature film in 1975 for Universal, and it was a massive box office hit. Adapted from the Peter Benchley novel and starring Roy Scheider, Richard Dreyfuss, Robert Shaw, Murray Hamilton, Lorraine Gary, and Bruce the Shark, it is still in the top ten of the biggest box office hits in history, adjusted for inflation.

This is one of the films that every horror fan should watch at some point. The tension and terror don’t just happen in the ocean, and it has great cinematography and performances, including the chemistry of the three leads, especially once they set out to sea to kill the rogue Great White shark. One unforgettable moment is when the mother of a boy killed by the shark confronts Sheriff Brody (Roy Scheider), but it’s not the only remarkable scene in the movie, which also has an underrated sense of humor about the proceedings.

Jaws is now streaming on Starz.

Anna Foerster directed the film, and it was written by Cory Goodman (Priest, The Last Witch Hunter).
