Let's not forget the free horror movies streaming in May. While it's tempting to focus on new releases, there's nothing like settling in with some popcorn to watch your favorite films, especially if you don't have to pay a membership fee to do so. The free streamers also give you the option to check out films you might have missed that didn't get the distribution of a major studio. Who doesn't love to discover a scary movie that they can then recommend to their friends? No one. It's all part of the fun.
This month is Ari Aster month of all of the free streamers, aka they all have at least one Ari Aster film available.
Kanopy, which is a streaming service that you can access with a public library card, has four terror tales this month. It is one of the great benefits of having a library card, and there are many others, by the way. Not all libraries have Kanopy, but it is well worth the effort to check, because they also program some really hard-to-find films. For a while, they were one of the only places where you could explore the catalog of the films of French 70s horror auteur Jean Rollin.
This month's choices are more mainstream, but lean more towards Stephen King adaptations, and one of Ari Aster's more surreal offerings, Beau Is Afraid. Don't forget to check out Kanopy's expansive list of genre films while you are on the website.
Pluto TV does have May's requisite Ari Aster title, in this case, it's Hereditary. But there are also lesser-known movies like Below, directed by David Twohy (Pitch Black and The Chronicles of Riddick) and co-written by Darren Aronofsky, The Haunting in Connecticut, which stars Scream King Kyle Gallner in an early role, and Peter Strickland's eerie In Fabric, about a haunted dress that destroys people's lives. Yes, the dress is haunted.
Pluto does have live channels that broadcast films and TV shows 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Aside from the dedicated Horror, Terror, Walking Dead Universe, and Twilight Zone channels, Pluto has added an X-Files Channel and a Universal Monsters channel for monster fans.
Tubi, well-known for the depth of its catalog of films, even those that are considered unavailable, has two Ari Aster movies, some classics in the genre, and Stephen King adaptations, some of which are both. Two films on Tubi's list are lesser-known movies that deserve more attention: Karen Kusama's The Invitation, which is being rediscovered and re-accessed, and Diego Hallivis' horror comedy, American Carnage.
American Carnage stars Jenna Ortega, who broke out as a star in the same year, in Scream (2022), and Jorge Lendeborg Jr., who was recently cast as Manny in The Last of Us, Season Three. replacing Danny Ramirez in the role. Tubi also has the brutal terror of Jeremy Saulnier's Green Room, a movie that is horrifying without anything supernatural ever happening.
