Following yesterday's official release date announcement, A24 has dropped the first teaser for Kane Parsons' liminal horror nightmare Backrooms. Let's explore:
Produced by James Wan for Wan’s Atomic Monster, Backrooms stars Chiwetel Ejiofor (The Life of Chuck, Mike Flanagan's The Exorcist) and Renate Reinsve (The Worst Person in the World, A Different Man), as well as Creep‘s Mark Duplass, Finn Bennett (True Detective), Lukita Maxwell (Afraid) and Avan Jogia (Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City).
An official logline for Backrooms reads:
After a therapist's patient goes missing into a dimension beyond reality, she has to enter the unknown to save him
Based on the viral series of found-footage videos from filmmaker and VFX artist Parsons (currently A24's youngest ever director at just 20 years old), which are themselves based on a 4chan creepypasta, the original Backrooms follows a young filmmaker’s fall into another dimension leaves him wandering through an unsettlingly yellow, empty and labyrinthine office space, which may or may not be home to otherworldly beings. The first video in the series, titled “The Backrooms (Found Footage)” racked up 66million views since its release four years ago.
Parsons directed Backrooms from a screenplay by Will Soodik, with Shawn Levy, Dan Cohen and Dan Levine producing for 21 Laps. Michael Clear produces alongside Wan for Atomic Monster.
