The most romantic date of the year might just be a couple of days out, but Focus Features' new teaser for buzzy festival horror hit Obsession will have you thinking twice about who you're getting loved up with.
Directed by Curry Barker (of viral found footage horror Milk & Serial fame), Obsession hits theaters on May 15. The supernatural pic stars Michael Johnston, Inde Navarrette, Cooper Tomlinson, Megan Lawless and Andy Richter, and was apparently inspired by an episode of The Simpsons where “Bart gets a monkey paw and causes a bunch of chaos.” An official logline reads:
After breaking the mysterious “One Wish Willow” to win his crush’s heart, a hopeless romantic finds himself getting exactly what he asked for but soon discovers that some desires come at a dark, sinister price.
Obsession is produced by James Harris (Teashop Productions), Haley Nicole Johnson (Under the Shell) and Christian Mercuri on behalf of Capstone, with Universal Pictures International set to handle overseas distribution for the pic in all territories except France, New Zealand and Russia. Focus Features acquired the pic shortly after its premiere at Toronto International Film Festival and going on to become a much-buzzed about horror from the festival circuit of 2025.
Shot for just $800, Barker's Milk & Serial, which follows the fallout of a surprise birthday prank gone wrong, has amassed more than 2 million views since it was uploaded to YouTube in 2024. Barker's second upcoming feature, Anything But Ghosts, was recently snapped up for production by Blumhouse’s Jason Blum and Spooky Pictures’ Roy Lee and Steven Schneider (Late Night with the Devil, Strange Darling), proving that Barker is a filmmaker to watch.
