The wheels are in motion on Hulu's upcoming Buffy The Vampire Slayer continuation from Oscar winner Chloé Zhao (Nomadland, Eternals) and showrunners Nora Zuckerman and Lila Zuckerman (Poker Face), with the original Slayer herself and executive producer Sarah Michelle Gellar revealing the title of the series.
Officially titled Buffy: New Sunnydale, the new show sees Gellar, who starred in the original series for seven seasons, return in a guest capacity, alongside new Slayer Ryan Kiera Armstrong, Faly Rakotohavana (Unprisoned, Secret Society of Second Born Royals), Chase Sui Wonders (I Know What You Did Last Summer), Ava Jean (A Week Away, Law & Order: SVU), Sarah Bock (Severance), Daniel di Tomasso (Witches of East End, Major Crimes) and Jack Cutmore-Scott (Oppenheimer, Frasier).
Speaking with the Shut Up, Evan podcast, where she revealed the official title, Gellar confirmed that the new show is “not a sequel, it’s not a reboot — it’s a continuation”, and will tell us where the titular Slayer “is now in this world and what is this world that Buffy lives in with her and without her.”
She added that Buffy: New Sunnydale is “not a reboot”, and is “not picking up with all of the same characters right away”, which is why the name New Sunnydale is so important to her: “It’s Buffy, but it’s also something else.”
Gellar also assured fans that, despite a long delay on the project, it's all in service of making the show the best it can be:
“I know this seems like it’s taking a long time, and it’s because unless we are sure that it is exactly what we set out to do and that it makes sense to do it, we don’t want to sell you the legacy by not. When I know it’s perfect, then it will be out there, but I won’t do it unless I know it can be that.”
Alongside Gellar, New Sunnydale is executive produced with Gail Berman. Fran Kuzui and Kaz Kuzui will executive produce via Suite B, while country queen Dolly Parton will executive produce via Sandollar. 20th Television and Searchlight Television will produce.
