He's taken Tokyo, San Francisco, New York and more, and now kaiju king Godzilla is coming to London as Toho Studios establishes its new European regional headquarters.
The legendary Japanese studio has also acquired Glasgow-based distributor Anime Limited from Germanyโs Plaion Pictures, in an deal that will grant Toho immediate distribution capabilities across theatrical, home video, TV sales, merchandising and licensing in the U.K. and France, with Toho Global and Plaion Pictures also aligning to extend distribution to Germany, Italy and other European territories. Basically, much more Godzilla goodness for the U.K. and EU.
The gargantuan move comes as part of Toho's so-called โGodzilla Strategyโ, which sees the company investing 15 billion yen into expanding on games, products, and attractions featuring the infamous giant reptilian, not to mention new movies, with Takashi Yamazaki'sย Godzilla Minus Zero and a potential Shin-Godzilla sequel en route, not to mention, on the American side of things, Legendary's MonsterVerse expanding with Godzilla x Kong: Supernova in 2027, a second season ofย Monarch: Legacy of Monsters,ย and the recently announced Monarch prequel series to boot.
Koji Ueda, president and representative director of Toho Global, tells us more:
We are excited to welcome (Anime Limited founder and managing director Andrew Partridge) Andrew and the Anime Ltd team into the growing Toho family, and to begin our new cooperation relationship with Plaion Pictures […] This move accelerates the timeline to realize โToho Vision 2032 Group Management Strategyโ by giving Toho an immediate pan-European distribution capability as well as access to Plaion Picturesโ highly additive infrastructure for merchandise operations.โ
Incredibly exciting news not just for EU-based Godzillaย fans, but also fans of anime and Japanese cinema in general. Stay tuned for updates, and for more, here's all the monster movies we're looking forward to in 2026.
