Astron-6, makers of the cult hit FATHER’S DAY, are back in theatres with MANBORG and their latest short film, BIO-COP (rolling out across Canada this month, details here). The team’s SFX and stop-motion guru, Steven Kostanski, has taken to the directors’ chair to deliver their special brand of retro-pop homage; this time a payment of respect to the video action cheesefests of the 80s and early 90s. Famous for making FATHER’s DAY for a budget of only $10,000, MANBORG gets what it gives out of only a thousand bucks and the pure love of the craft from Kostanski and company.

Witches, radioactive mutants, giant monsters and endless ghosts have had their moments in the found-footage genre, and now it’s eco-terror’s turn. And with THE BAY, director Barry Levinson has adopted a somewhat different approach in tune with his hot-button subject matter.

Proving to be AMERICAN HORROR STORY: ASYLUM’s most focused, unrelenting episode yet, “Nor’easter” saw two storms hit Briarcliff, and bring all manner of violent shame with them. Sister Mary Eunice, now with the Devil in her, takes command of the proceedings as the asylum prepares for some hellish weather. Everyone else, dissolved into chaos. Guilt! Shame! Sacrifice!

Vampires have been around for many a day. From Dracula to Brad Pitt, they’ve been burning up our screens, as well as our hearts. Save for a few minor indiscretions, these creatures of the night have always been a horror favorite. They are deadly, brutal, elusive, and sometimes, completely smoking hot. The latter, of course, being Vampirella, one of the few and far between female vampires who proved herself not only being just as vicious as her male counterparts, but has a shelf-life that outlasts most of them as well. After shuffling back and forth between several companies, our sexy lady of the night has found a new home at Dynamite Comics and is back to starring in strange, grotesque tales of fear. Her recent adventure finds her pitted against a parody of a long time vampire crusher, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the equally under dressed, Fluffy the Vampire Killer.

Everybody was psyched up to see what happens next at the prison, especially more of Rick’s continued slide down a dangerous slope. Instead, they pulled the rug out from under us and gave us an episode which focused entirely on Andrea and Michonne.

Why am I reviewing these two new flicks together, when one is hitting theaters all over the country in 3D and the other went straight to DVD/Blu-ray this week? Let me count the ways…

A comparatively minor episode in light of its packed premiere “Tricks and Treats” still managed to be everything both wonderful and frustrating about AMERICAN HORROR STORY: ASYLUM. The second outing sought to fit an exorcism, a blackout, revealing kinks, additional bare behinds, more clumsily delivered exposition/social commentary and best of all, begin its slow reveal that Lily Rabe is, in fact, the Kate Mara of this season. That is to say, the main reason for watching.
