VANISHING ON 7TH STREET, the latest from the talented if inconsistent Brad Anderson (beginning its theatrical release today from Magnolia Pictures’ Magnet Releasing), will in many reviews and discussions be compared to THE TWILIGHT ZONE. Its small cast, confined to one location during an unexplained widespread apocalypse of shadows and disappearances, does immediately recall the classic series, but sadly, beyond its premise, the parallel isn’t sustained.

The best horror is often transcendent, using the grim and fantastic to discuss harsh real-world concerns. When such is the case with international fare, it can be a stimulating and exciting experience learning which fears the globe shares, and what horrors are all our own. Jorge Michel Grau’s cannibalism drama WE ARE WHAT WE ARE takes on such an aesthetic and not only comes to the U.S. as a damn good film, but a particularly resonant one.

It’s Valentine’s Day—that Hallmark holiday for gullible, sentimental dunderheads who saccharinely subscribe to the ridiculously risible notion that you can testify your love for someone on a solitary day by (if you’re a dude) ingratiatingly purchasing confectionary (aren’t people unhealthy enough?), flowers (which will eventually die, like your love for each other) and that aforementioned Hallmark greeting card with its sickeningly syrupy and cornball pronouncement of eternal and undying affection (which she’ll throw away with your flowers in a week’s time). Hogwash! So what amatory-inducing movie should you see with your loved one tonight? How about eschewing the customary and gag-inducing Sandra Bullock/Jennifer Aniston/Drew Barrymore rom-com and instead sliding up to your main squeeze and watching the only February 14th flick worth viewing on this most consumer and unromantic of holidays: Patrick Lussier’s 2009 redux MY BLOODY VALENTINE. Here’s Ed Patrick’s review of the film. (And if you want to make it a double-feature, watch George Mihalka’s original as well.) “Sarah, be my bloody Valentine!”

THE ROOMMATE doesn’t come billed as a remake, but as sure as THE RING/THE GRUDGE/THE DEPARTED/QUARANTINE’s Roy Lee and Doug Davison are the producers, it is for all intents and purposes an update of the Jennifer Jason Leigh-starrer SINGLE WHITE FEMALE. Only here, the setting is a college campus and…you know, Sam’s been acting kind of odd lately. He was all friendly and everything when he started working here, but lately he’s been getting kind of obsessive. Hang on, I have to go check something in another room…

LET ME IN, Matt Reeves’ remake of Tomas Alfredson’s 2008 film, just came out on DVD & Blu-ray this past Tuesday. Here’s Michael Gingold’s two cents on the original. Which do you like better? LET THE RIGHT ONE IN or LET ME IN?

Patrick Tatopoulos is one of the judges on FACE OFF, the Syfy competition/elimination series exploring the world of special FX make-up artists. Tatopoulos, of course, is the creature designer/FX supervisor behind such films as GODZILLA, PITCH BLACK, SILENT HILL and many more, including the first two UNDERWORLD movies. However, for 2009’s UNDERWORLD: RISE OF THE LYCANS, Tatopoulos forfeited the FX duties in order to make his feature-length directorial debut.

“He who fights with monsters might take care, lest he thereby become a monster,” wrote the philosopher Nietzsche in his anti-religion screed BEYOND GOOD AND EVIL. The new possession drama THE RITE, opening tomorrow from New Line Cinema, makes for an unfortunately literal demonstration of this maxim.
