With nineteen Emmy nominations under its belt, Widow’s Bay is racking up another major accomplishment: it’s heading to movie theaters. Deadline reports that Apple TV has teamed up with Rutgers University to screen the final three episodes of Season 1 at AMC Theatres across the country, completely for free.
Rutgers, the alma mater of show creator Katie Dippold, is screening the episodes on August 12 at select AMC theaters in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, and San Francisco. This premiere marks the first time any Apple TV+ show has been shown on the big screen, joining shows like Games of Thrones and Stranger Things as the rare TV projects to do so.
“Katie Dippold’s remarkable success is a source of tremendous pride for the Rutgers community,” said Dr. Michael Kim, dean of Rutgers’ Mason Gross School of the Arts. “Through wit, imagination, and exceptional storytelling, she has created work that captivates audiences while affirming the enduring power of artistic imagination. Her accomplishments reflect the creativity, intellectual curiosity, and ambition that define Rutgers graduates, and her connection to New Jersey makes this recognition especially meaningful. We look forward to the stories she has yet to tell.”
Widow’s Bay has already been renewed for a second season, returning to the new Martha’s Vineyard to continue unearthing its secrets. The series earned the most Emmy nominations for a freshman show this year, and is up for Outstanding Comedy Series, as well as earning acting nominations for stars Matthew Rhys, Stephen Root, Dale Dickey, and Kate O’Flynn, and writing nominations for Dippold. It’s also nominated for Best Series at this year’s Chainsaw Awards.
