Demián Rugna's grisly possession horror When Evil Lurks has a sequel in development, according to the director's recent appearance on “La Broma Infinita” from Argentine streaming channel Gelantina (and thanks to our friends at Bloody Disgusting for drawing our attention to the news!)
Released in 2023, the FANGORIA Chainsaw Award-nominated When Evil Lurks follows two brothers (Ezequiel Rodríguez and Demián Salomon) trying to protect their respective families from a rapidly spreading demonic possession across Argentina. Following a theatrical release by IFC Films on October 6, and a Shudder debut on October 27, Rugna's follow-up to the equally terrifying Terrified (2017) quickly became a hit with horror fans due to its gory and shocking scenes.
Per Bloody's translation of the interview, Rugna confirms that a When Evil Lurks 2 is in development, although dependent on funding:
“We have part two written, yes, and we’re just waiting for the funding to come through. We have to make some script modifications to make it perfect, but the studio that wants to make it is already there.”
Whether or not Shudder will return for the sequel remains to be seen, but given the film's positive reaction from fans and critics alike, we can't imagine they'd be against the idea.
Look out for more on When Evil Lurks 2 as we get it, and while you wait, here's our post-When Evil Lurks interview with Rugna at last year's Fantastic Fest:
