Academy Award winners topline the top horror movies on streaming this week, as well as some new and not-so-new fright films for you to check out. The three horror films that picked up Oscars last weekend remain on the list: Ryan Coogler's Sinners, Zach Cregger's Weapons, and Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein. It was an amazing ceremony for horror fans this year, and we were even treated to a vampire's arrival on the red carpet.
There were a lot of welcome horror moments that happened in the Dolby Theater this year, enough to make our beloved genre and its fans feel welcome in Hollywood. We've waited a long time to see horror being celebrated on the Academy Awards stage.
The newest film on the list is Look Away, which shows us our darkest fears and our violent impulses simply by looking into our mirrors. Friday the 13th was back this week as well, because the second 13th of the year, and this year has a grand total of three occurrences of the scary day, fell on the calendar last week. Who could resist watching the movie again on such an auspicious day? Don't worry, the fall will give you another chance to celebrate with Jason at Camp Crystal Lake.

Sinners - Streaming on Prime
SINNERS (Credit: Warner Bros. Ent.) Predictably, the Best Song performance of “I Lied to You”, from Sinners at the Academy Awards, was a musical extravaganza that brought the “Pierce the Veil” scene from the film to the stage. It was every bit as amazing as the scene was in the film. Jack O'Connell, who played the Irish vampire, Remmick, in the film, actually wore his custom-made vampire teeth from the film to the Oscar ceremony and made a cameo during the performance, still trying to get into the juke joint.
But the biggest news is that Sinners won four Academy Awards: Michael B. Jordan won his first Oscar for his work as the twins Smoke and Stack. While the film didn't take Best Picture, writer and director Ryan Coogler won Best Original Screenplay, and Ludwig Göransson won for Best Score. In a history-making win, Autumn Durald Arkapaw won Best Cinematography, as the first woman, first Black woman, and first Filipina to win an Academy Award. She was also the first to be nominated in all of those categories.
Weapons - Streaming on HBO Max
WEAPONS (Credit: IMDb) Fan favorite character Aunt Gladys and the actor who played her had quite a time on Sunday. First of all, the host of the Academy Awards, Conan O'Brien's first comedy skit had him dressed as the character, right down to the striking make-up and red-haired wig. He was then chased through the set by a crowd of children in the hilarious gag, which led actor Amy Madigan to exclaim, “Gladys is opening up the whole show!” and that the skit knocked her out of her seat, when she was asked after the ceremony.
But let's not forget that Weapons has an ensemble cast which also includes Josh Brolin, Julia Garner, Alden Ehrenreich, Austin Abrams, Cary Christopher, Toby Huss, and Benedict Wong, or writer and director Zach Cregger, who brought this terrifying and hilarious film to the screen. The film is the second horror movie to win an Academy award for 2025.
Weapons is now streaming on HBO Max.
Frankenstein - Streaming on Netflix
FRANKENSTEIN (Credit: Ken Woroner/Netflix) The third horror film to win at the Academy Awards last Sunday was Guillermo del Toro's adaptation of Mary Shelley's foundational novel, Frankenstein. Oscar Isaac, Jacob Elordi, Mia Goth, and Christoph Waltz star in the film, which is an opulent work of art that is faithful to the original text. From the costumes to the sets and performances, everything in Frankenstein was carefully curated to have the most impact.
Out of the nine nominations garnered for Frankenstein, the film won three craft awards for Best Costume Design, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, and Best Production Design. The Academy voters saw the beauty in the gothic film.
Frankenstein is now streaming on Netflix.
The Long Walk - Streaming on Starz
THE LONG WALK (Credit: Murray Close/Lionsgate) Director Francis Lawrence's dystopian nightmare has spent eleven weeks in the top ten since it was released to streaming on Starz in early January. The film is based on one of author Stephen King's books, and his earliest novel, which was not published until 1979. It was published under his pseudonym Richard Bachman and is one of the two Bachman novels that have a brutal national competition at their center.
Cooper Hoffman, David Jonsson, Garrett Wareing, Tut Nyuot, Joshua Odjick, Charlie Plummer, Ben Wang, Roman Griffin Davis, Josh Hamilton, Judy Greer, and Mark Hamill star in this heartbreaking and compelling tale, with Hamill giving one of his scariest performances.
The Long Walk is now streaming on Starz.
The Ugly Stepsister - Streaming on Shudder
THE UGLY STEPSISTER (Credit: Shudder) The fourth horror film nominated for an Academy Award is Emilie Blichfeldt's The Ugly Stepsister, a deeply disturbing body horror film based on the fairy tale Cinderella. The film is no fairy tale in the modern sense, but it does have a lot more in common with “Aschenputtel,” by the Brothers Grimm, which features bloody doings.
While the film did not win the Oscar, the fact that such a gruesome body horror film, which was also an independently produced, international film, was nominated for the category was a victory for the filmmakers, actors, the genre, and the film itself. Either way, it's good for those who love horror and cinema itself.
28 Years Later - Streaming on Netflix
28 YEARS LATER (Credit: Sony Pictures) The second film in the top ten that stars Jack O'Connell retains its place once again and has been part of the top ten for almost seven months, since it was released on September 20. It is very possible that 28 Years Later and its sequel, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, will be on the list at the same time when the latter is released on streaming in two weeks. Just think of the potential for a great binge-watch of the entire series.
The original filmmakers, Danny Boyle, Alex Garland, and the inventive DP, Anthony Dod Mantle, all came back for this sequel, which was wonderful news for fans of the series, but the cast is all new, and aside from the aforementioned Jack O'Connell, includes Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jack O'Connell, Alfie Williams, Chi Lewis-Parry, and Ralph Fiennes.
28 Years Later is now streaming on Netflix.
Men - Streaming on HBO Max
MEN (Credit: IMDb) Writer and director Alex Garland's third film, which is a surreal slice of folk horror, stands steadfast in the top ten this week. In it, a woman is widowed by her emotionally manipulative husband, James, after revealing that she plans to divorce him. Academy Award winner for Best Actress, Jessie Buckley stars as Harper Marlowe and Rory Kinnear as the owner of the house Harper rents, and several other men and a boy of the village.
Harper is continually hounded by the men after she witnesses a horrific death, as she seeks to get away escape from the tragedy. The Irish architectural grotesquerie, Sheela na gig, appears in the film, as does the architectural motif, the Green Man or Folate Head. Men will leave Prime in 14 days.
Look Away - Streaming on Prime
LOOK AWAY (Credit: IMDb) New on the top ten horror streaming this week is a Canadian movie from 2018, Look Away, which stars India Eisley, Mira Sorvino, and Jason Isaacs. A shy and bullied teen girl, Maria, finds a protector and confidante in her mirror and exchanges places. While trapped in the mirror, she can't stop her mirror image, Airam, from committing acts of violence against the people who hurt her.
Assaf Bernstein wrote and directed Look Away, which is also available on Hoopla and Pluto TV.
Look Away is now streaming on Prime.
Friday the 13th - Streaming on Paramount+
FRIDAY THE 13TH (Credit: IMDb) Sure enough, during the week of the second Friday the 13th of 2026, the film Friday the 13th rushes back into the list. Written by Victor Miller and directed by Sean S. Cunningham, this movie definitely wears its influences, namely Mario Bava's A Bay of Blood, on its sleeve. It stars Betsy Palmer, Adrienne King, Harry Crosby, Laurie Bartram, Mark Nelson, Jeannine Taylor, Robbi Morgan, and a very young Kevin Bacon.
Luckily for Friday the 13th fans and not so luckily for triskaidekaphobians, there is still one more Friday the 13th to go in 2026. There's plenty of time to plan your Friday the 13th watch party for this fall.
Friday the 13th is now streaming on Paramount+.
The Substance - Streaming on HBO Max
THE SUBSTANCE (Credit: IMDb) Demi Moore returned to the Academy Awards on Sunday, this time as a presenter and as a member of the tribute to Rob Reiner, which gathered cast members from his films. The Substance has captured the tenth spot in the top ten and remains a favorite of scary movie fans. Moore was nominated as Best Actress last year and looked stunning in custom Gucci.
Writer and director Coralie Fargeat has promised that her next film will not be a sequel to the film, which also stars Margaret Qualley and Dennis Quaid. She was invited to become a member of the Academy after being nominated for Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Director at the 2024 Academy Awards, and is a member of the French film group, which seeks gender equality in cinema, Collectif 50/50. The Substance won an Academy Award for Best Makeup and Hairstyling.
