In unsurprising but no less exciting news, Ryan Coogler's The X-Files has found a home, with the sci-fi series reboot officially ordered to series at Hulu.
Starring Danielle Deadwyler (The Woman in the Yard, The Bell Jar) and Himesh Patel (Tenet, Station Eleven, The Assessment), the reimagining of Chris Carter's cult favorite show follows two highly decorated but vastly different FBI agents who form an unlikely bond when they are assigned to a long-shuttered division devoted to cases involving unexplained phenomena.
Also starring in The X-Files, Coogler's first project since the Oscar-winning vampire epic Sinners, are Amy Madigan (also coming off an Academy Award for her work in Zach Cregger’s Weapons), Steve Buscemi, Devery Jacobs, Tantoo Cardinal, Lochlyn Munro, Joel D. Montgrad, and Sofia Grace Clifton.
Original series star Gillian Anderson has also expressed an interest in returning, although nothing is yet confirmed.
Per Deadline, Coogler wrote, directed and executive produced the pilot via his Proximity Media. He also executive produces with showrunner Jennifer Yale (The Copenhagen Test). FANGORIA Chainsaw Award winner Zinzi Coogler and Sev Ohanian also executive produce for Proximity Media, as does The X-Files creator Carter. Co-executive producers are Simone Harris for Proximity Media, along with Deadwyler and Patel.
Here's what Coogler has to say in a new statement:
“I’ve loved The X-Files for a long time, so getting the chance to write and direct the pilot has meant a great deal to me […] What Chris Carter created is special, and we wanted to honor everything that made the original series connect with so many people while also finding our own way into that world. Danielle and Himesh, along with the rest of our cast, have brought such original perspectives and performances to these characters, and watching that come together has been one of the most rewarding parts of the experience.
I couldn’t have asked for better collaborators than my crew, colleagues at Proximity Media and our partners at Onyx Collective and 20th Television. I’m grateful for the trust and support they’ve given us as we take on this new chapter.”
Look out for more on The X-Files as we get it.
