We talk about daddy issues plenty in horror, but what about mommy issues? They can produce just as terrifying results — if not more so — and there’s certainly no shortage of material to work with. If that’s just what you’re looking for, then Elwood Quincy Walker’s newest film The Mortician’s Daughter is the perfect fit, with a horror legend behind the wheel as a mom who can’t let her issues go even from beyond the grave.
Written and directed by Walker — who edited last year’s Chainsaw Awards — The Mortician’s Daughter stars Creepshow alum Hannah Barefoot alongside horror icon Bonnie Aarons, best known for her work as The Nun in the Conjuring film franchise. The film’s synopsis is as follows:
After her Mother’s death, Violet must fulfill her Mother’s final wish that she is embalmed by her own daughter. But as she prepares her Mother’s corpse in the funeral home she was raised in, long-buried memories resurface & Violet discovers a terrifying family secret…
The Mortician’s Daughter follows up on Walker’s two viral short films, Kissed and The Rule of Three, as well as episodes of Bloody Bites and Fun Size Horror’s Shocktale Party, and Vision Video’s music video for “In My Side” in 2023. Aarons, whose upcoming work also includes Mrs. Ladadee and If It Bleeds alongside Doug Jones and Dee Wallace, serves as producer with Walker and Mora Killeen Walker.
The Mortician’s Daughter will have its Los Angeles premiere at this year’s Screamfest on October 11, screening at 2PM PT at the iconic TCL Chinese Theatre as part of the festival’s Shorts Block 2. Other titles premiering alongside the terrifying new project include Frankebabes From Beyond the Grave, The Hiring Protocol, Imposter Syndrome, In the Shadows, Itch, Night Shift, and Slow.
The Mortician’s Daughter has not set a wide release. Tickets for its Screamfest screening, as well as the festival’s other offerings, are available now. Check out the trailer below:
