Following up his Oscar-winning kaiju epic Godzilla Minus One, director Takashi Yamazaki is teaming up with Sony Pictures and J.J. Abrams' Bad Robot for his next feature, Grandgear.

This news follows earlier reports that Yamazaki will also be helming a sequel to Godzilla Minus One.

According to Deadline, who reported the news earlier today, Grandgear will be Yamazaki's English-language debut, which he will also write and produce.

Unsurprisingly, given Godzilla Minus One‘s gargantuan critical and financial success (racking up a massive $107 million worldwide, including nearly $57 million in North America alone after various theatrical re-releases), a hot bidding war was opened. Per Deadline:

[…] the industry has been clamoring to get in business with Yamazaki and once word was out that he had his first English language pic on the market, bids came in fast. Sony would ultimately land the rights, beating out a number of bids and sources say multiple factors came into play, which included the studio commitment to theatrical as well as Sonyโ€™s close Japanese ties through its parent company.

Plot details of Grandgear are still firmly under wraps, so we can't be sure what genre it falls into. However, given Yamazaki's penchant for large-scale visual effects and monster movies, we're sure it'll be something very worth keeping an eye on.

While we wait for more on Grandgear, why not consider grabbing yourself a copy of Godzilla Minus One to stamp onto your physical media shelf?
