Even though he’s now known for his superhero films, one of James Gunn’s first films was a cult horror classic. Slither turns twenty this year, and to celebrate, not only is the film coming back to theaters, but Visions Home Video is releasing the film on 4K and Blu-ray this spring, along with some limited edition steelbooks.

Starring Nathan Fillion, Elizabeth Banks, and Michael Rooker, Slither tells the story of an extraterrestrial parasite that invades a small country town, hellbent on devouring all life on Earth, with only the town sheriff and a local woman standing in its way. The new 4K release is restored from the film’s original 35mm Interpositive print, and approved by both Gunn and the film’s director of photography, Gregory Middleton.

The special edition steelbook features cover art by Chris Malbon, with a special collectible poster print, and the exclusive 4K Dolby Vision print. Both the steelbook and the standard Blu-ray feature all new special features, including interviews with Middleton, editor John Axelrad, composer Tyler, and special effects makeup designer Todd Masters.

Slither was originally released in 2006, marking Gunn’s feature debut as director after writing several films, including both live-action Scooby-Doo movies and Zack Snyder’s Dawn of the Dead. The film was a commercial failure, earning only $12 million on a $15 million budget, but eventually developed a cult following that skyrocketed Gunn to success, first with the Guardians of the Galaxy films and now as co-director of the DCU for Warner Bros. It also won the Chainsaw Award for Highest Body Count in 2006, along with nominations for Relationship From Hell, Dude You Don’t Wanna Mess With, and Looks That Kill.

Slither returns to theaters on April 10, with the special edition steelbook hitting shelves on May 18.
