As part of its ongoing series of books adapting past horror favorites, Encyclopocalypse Publications releases the official novelization of the cult-fave 1983 slasher film SLEEPAWAY CAMP August 26. Written by B.R. Flynn, based on the script by writer/director Robert Hiltzik, it “offers a fresh perspective on a beloved horror staple,” according to the publisher. Get an exclusive look at part of Chapter One, “Destiny at Lake Algonquin,” below! (Please note: This text contains SPOILERS regarding the movie’s plot.)
The novel’s synopsis: “Set in the summer of 1983 at Camp Arawak, the story follows Angela Baker, a quiet and withdrawn teenager seeking a fresh start amidst the camp’s lively atmosphere. However, as tensions rise and bodies begin to pile up, Angela’s past traumas resurface, and a darkness within her starts to emerge.
“Flynn’s adaptation delves deeper into Angela’s psyche, exploring themes of trauma, identity, and the societal challenges faced by those who are misunderstood. This novelization not only honors the original film's legacy but also provides a nuanced narrative that resonates with contemporary readers.”
“As someone who has struggled with issues of gender and identity,” Flynn says, “the opportunity to shape this classic slasher juggernaut into something that satisfies longtime fans and, hopefully, show them something new, has left me humbled, elated and, in the end, proud.”

Sleepaway Camp is now available for pre-order in trade paperback, mass-market paperback and eBook. The trade edition features new hand-painted cover art by Jennifer Nelson-Duregger, and the publisher will be selling the original canvas; collectors can e-mail info@encyclopocalypse.com to be informed of its availability.
