Eurocentric beauty standards take a beating in the new trailer for Slanted, Bleecker Street's twisted new satirical body horror hitting theaters on March 13.
Written and directed by Amy Wang, Slanted stars Shirley Chen (Dìdi), Mckenna Grace (Five Nights at Freddy's 2, Scream 7), and Maitreyi Ramakrishnan (Never Have I Ever), and follows Joan Huang, a Chinese-American high schooler who idolizes the popular girls and dreams of being prom queen, but fears the only way to win is to look like all the past queens whose portraits line her high school halls:
Enter Ethnos: a mysterious cosmetic surgery clinic that makes people of color appear white. Joan undergoes the procedure and wakes up a beautiful blonde destined for the crown, but at what cost?
Currently sitting at a neat 86% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, Slanted is being praised for its sharp satire and fresh take on the recent The Substance-inspired canon of female horror filmmakers fighting back against the ridiculous expectations that society demands, like The Ugly Stepsister and Grafted.
In a poignant statement, director Wang had the following to say of her own personal experiences that inspired Slanted:
“As an immigrant, l've always been aware that I looked different. As a teenager trying desperately to fit in, I used to wake up and wonder, wouldn't life just be easier if I were white? Slanted is a satirical exploration of whiteness that challenges that question. It examines the cost of chasing acceptance, and what it means to abandon yourself in the process. Is belonging worth losing who you are for a system that was never built to value you?”
