Following the gargantuan success of their festive frightener Terrifier 3, Cineverse and Bloody Disgusting are bringing another Christmas slasher to screens with a reimagining of Silent Night, Deadly Night.
Mike P. Nelson (Wrong Turn, V/H/S/85) is set to direct, with Scott J. Schneid and Dennis Whitehead, executive producers of Charles Sellier Jr.'s 1984 original, producing.
The original Silent Night, Deadly Night tells the story of young Billy Chapman, who is traumatized after seeing his parents killed by a man dressed as Santa Claus. Ten years later, a psychotic Billy dons a Santa suit himself and gets bloody revenge.
Speaking with Deadline, Nelson expanded on his own personal history with the holiday slasher:
โThe opportunity to work with producers involved with the original Silent Night, Deadly Night and to partner with the Terrifier 3 team is an honor. Iโll never forget walking into the video store at the mini mall when I was 5 and seeing that poster for the original film. I was in awe and started imagining what horrifying things would happen. To be a part of the filmโs legacy many years later is insane! Iโm looking forward to getting production underway, and unleashing my new take on this compelling story. Billy is back!โ
Cineverse's Executive Director of Acquisitions, Brandon Hill (who will oversee distribution and executive produce alongside Brad Miska, Erick Opeka and Yolanda Macias) adds:
โI have always been a huge fan of Silent Night, Deadly Night and canโt wait to bring Mikeโs vision to fellow fans of iconic slashers […] As we have seen this year, there continues to be incredible demand for independent horror films with bite, and we believe this can deliver strong audiences from theatrical to home entertainment and streaming.โ
The original Silent Night, Deadly Night was, much like Terrifier 3, a controversy back in the day, with Deadline reminding that the The National Parent & Teacher Association fought to have the film removed from theaters and there were protests against the gory slasher being advertised as a Christmas movie.
The film sparked five sequels and a remake in 2012 from director Steven C. Miller and starring Malcolm McDowell.
Nelson's Silent Night, Deadly Night is reportedly due to enter production soon, and is slated for a late 2025 theatrical release. We'll bring you more exciting updates as we get them.
