In 2022, Scored to Death Entertainment LLC launched a successful crowdfunding campaign raising funds for a documentary center on horror film music, Scored to Death: The Dark Art of Scary Movie Music. The documentary is based on the popular Scored to Death book series composed of interviews with some of the most recognizable and celebrated names in the world of horror scores. One of the campaignโs most sought-after backer rewards is now available to everyone as a limited edition vinyl.
The new compilation album, Scored to Death: Musique dโHorreur, is executive produced by author/filmmaker/musician J. Blake Fichera and features 12 unique cover versions of some of horrorโs most iconic (and a few obscure) movie themes, recorded by an impressive line-up of musical talent specifically for this release.ย
โWhen I was trying to figure out what I could offer potential Kickstarter backers, I wanted to come up with somethingโother than a copy of the documentaryโthat would be truly awesome,โ says Fichera. โWith the film focused entirely on horror film music, an album release seemed the most logical. I started contacting bands, musicians, and composers I admire. To my amazement, most of them generously agreed to record and donate a track to this horror-themed compilation album. The result is something very special.โ
The eclectic group of contributing artists includes horror music legend Alan Howarth, the bands Voyag3r and Anima Morte, Steve Moore (from the band Zombi), Holly Amber Church, Wojciech Golczewski, Brooke Blair and Will Blair, Harper Smith (credited as Jerry Smith), Richard Christy (former Death & current Charred Walls of the Damned drummer), Steve Greene (from the band Voyag3r), J. Blake, and The Brisco County Youth Orchestra.
โI think listeners are genuinely going to love how this team of musicians and composers reimagined these memorable film cues,โ Fichera adds. โThey each made the tracks their own, and though the compilation features several different musical voices, with styles ranging from synthesized-classical to heavy progressive rock, the album miraculously sounds and feels like a single cohesive work. Everyone was instinctually on the same page.โ
The tracklist consists of new arrangements of musical themes from the iconic horror films The Omen (1976), Phantasm, The Shining, The Fog, and Bram Stokerโs Dracula, as well as cult favorites Day of the Dead, Puppet Master, Stepfather II, and Basement Jack. Ambitious interpretations of the signature themes from Deep Red, Sette Note in Nero (aka The Psychic), and Cannibal Holocaust represent the world of Italian horror.
A digital single is available, however, the complete Scored to Death: Musique dโHorreur album is available exclusively as a limited edition mystery-color vinyl LP and CD through Bandcamp. Supplies are limited, and as with the campaign, all profits go directly toward the documentaryโs completion. Check out the full tracklist and contributing artists below.
