Megastar Glen Powellโs upcoming reboot of The Running Man just got an exciting update: The Hollywood Reporter writes that Katy OโBrian has joined the cast of the Edgar Wright-directed dystopian thriller, based on the Stephen King novel of the same name and set to hit theaters next year.
No other cast for the film, which Wright co-wrote with Michael Bacall, has been announced, but we do know that Top Gun: Maverick star Powell will be leading the film as Ben Richards, a man who stoops to terrifying lows in order to get his daughter the medicine she requires. Details on OโBrianโs role have not been revealed.
She recently starred in this yearโs breakout killer-thriller Love Lies Bleeding as an obsessive bodybuilder opposite Kristen Stewart, but also co-starred with Powell in this summerโs legacy disaster movie sequel Twisters, as one of his merry band of storm chasers. Will she be sporting a cowboy hat in this one too? We can only hope.
The Running Man was originally published by King in 1982, under his famous pseudonym Richard Bachman. The story follows a desperate man who joins a deadly competition not unlike Richard Connellโs The Most Dangerous Game, in which hunters track down competitors to kill them. The longer they survive, the more money they make, but what happens when someone breaks the rules of the game? Guess weโll just have to watch to find out.
The novel, one of eight King wrote under the Bachman pen name, was adapted into a film once before, directed by Paul Michael Glaser and starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. That film was only loosely based on Kingโs novel, but who knows how faithful Powellโs upcoming reboot will be. The new film is set to hit theaters next Thanksgiving season, on November 21, 2025 โ ironically, the same year the original novel takes place.
The reboot of The Running Man is set to hit theaters next year. Keep an eye on FANGORIA for updates as they arrive.
