After two long years since its Fantastic Fest premiere, Macon Blair's The Toxic Avenger is finally headed to theaters on August 29, with Entertainment Weekly today debuting two first-look images as star Peter Dinklage in action as a new take on Toxie.
Alongside Dinklage, Blair's reimagining of the 1984 Troma cult classic also stars Kevin Bacon, Elijah Wood, Jacob Tremblay, Julia Davis, Taylour Paige and Luisa Guerreiro who provides the physical performance of Toxie.
The Toxic Avenger follows a downtrodden janitor Winston Gooze (Dinklage), who, after a freak accident, transforms into the mutant vigilante:
“Armed with his signature mop, the unlikely hero battles freaks, gangsters and corrupt CEOs while trying to save his relationship with his son. The story channels the subversive gonzo energy of the original Toxic Avenger while delivering a fresh, contemporary twist,”
In the 1984 original, co-directed by Troma king Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz, Mitch Cohen's Toxie was brought to life by makeup artist Jennifer Aspinall. Speaking with EW, Blair stressed that his vision of The Toxic Avenger will be his own, but will certainly pay homage to its roots:
“The goal was to try to stay true to the vibe of Lloyd's original Jennifer Aspinall/Mitch Cohen creature, with some influence from the Toxic Crusaders cartoon's look, while also trying to do something new and weird and lovable with Toxie's design. I love what Millenium FX did with it — part human, part mutant, all heart.”
