There’s no stopping Aunt Gladys. Amy Madigan is taking home this year’s Academy Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for her role in Zach Cregger’s Weapons, which terrified audiences everywhere and inspired plenty of crazy Halloween costumes in turn.

Madigan was one of two supporting actresses to be nominated for their work in a horror film this year, alongside Wunmi Mosaku for Sinners. Other nominees included Elle Fanning and Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas for Sentimental Value and Teyana Taylor for One Battle After Another, though Madigan was the clear frontrunner, especially after her win at this year’s Actor Awards (formerly the SAG-AFTRA Awards).

This was Madigan’s second Academy Award nomination, after she was nominated in the same category in 1986 for Twice in a Lifetime. (She lost out that year to Anjelica Huston, who won for her role in Prizzi’s Honor.) This year alone, she’s won numerous awards for playing the chilling Aunt Gladys, including an Astra Film Award and a Critics’ Choice Award, as well as being nominated for a Golden Globe.

Weapons was not the first time Madigan had dipped her toe into horror though. Before she donned that iconic red wig to play Gladys, she’d featured in films like A Crooked Somebody, The Hunt, and Antlers, and was even nominated for a Chainsaw Award in 1994 for her work in The Dark Half. She also had a recurring role in the short-lived Penny Dreadful spin-off City of Angels, and is set to star in Sponsor, an upcoming psychological thriller film starring Jason Segel.

The FANGORIA team congratulates Amy Madigan on her much-deserved win. Long live Aunt Gladys!
