Hellboy creator Mike Mignola is gearing up to expand the world of his popular sci-fi fantasy creation yet again. Following the success of the 2023 series Miss Truesdale and the Fall of Hyperborea, FANGORIA is excited to team with Dark Horse to announce that Mignola is reteaming with artist Jesse Lonergan for the brand new continuation Miss Truesdale and the Rise of Man, which hits shelves this December.
Written by Mignola, with art, covers, and colors by Lonergan and letters by Clem Robins, the four-issue miniseries will continue the story of Miss Truesdale, a Victorian woman who discovered existence of her past life as Anum Yassa, an ancient gladiator. Now, thrown into that past life, she is stuck wandering the forest in search of answers about her past, present, and future lives, only to discover a dark entity on her trail and threatening all of mankind.
โMy ending the Hellboy world (sort of) in the B.P.R.D. series, I now find myself fascinated by the very beginnings of it,โ Mignola said. โMiss Truesdale and the Rise of Man is not a story I would even attempt to tell without the storytelling genius of Jesse Lonergan. For me, coming up with the story was a rollercoaster of strange surprises and Jesse has made it even stranger, more beautiful than I could have imagined. This is the deepest dive yet into the world and how it all works.โ
We also have an exclusive sneak peek at Lonerganโs covers for the first issue of the series, both of which feature the dual personalities of Miss Truesdale and Anum Yassa. The first features Anum battling a strange forest creature, with Miss Truesdaleโs face framed behind her, while the second features an axe-wielding Miss Truesdale popping out of the shell of Anum Yassa, ready to inflict vengeance on anyone who harms her.
โWith Miss Truesdale and the Fall of Hyperborea, we explored this past life relationship between a woman in Victorian England and the ancient gladiator she was in a past life,โ said Lonergan. โNow, in Miss Truesdale and the Rise of Man, those two characters are merged, a Victorian woman in this powerful gladiator body, exploring a new world and battling all manner of monsters and beasts. These travels and battles culminate in a confrontation that reveals deep truths about the Hellboy Universe.โ
The 22-page first issue of Miss Truesdale and the Rise of Man hits shelves on December 10. Check out Lonerganโs covers for the issue below:
