Mike Flanagan has added another frequent collaborator to his upcoming Exorcist movie, with The Life of Chuck star Chiwetel Ejiofor joining the supernatural horror pic.

Ejiofor joins previously announced stars Scarlett Johansson,ย Diane Lane and Hamnet breakout Jacobi Jupe, with The Exorcist (official title TBA) hitting theaters on March 12, 2027. Whether or not any of Flanagan's other frequent collaborators, the lovingly-referred to ‘Flanafam', like Kate Siegel, Carla Gugino, Henry Thomas, Samantha Sloyan, Rahul Kohli, or Bruce Greenwood remains to be seen.

Flanagan is set to direct the film from his own script, as a follow-up to the ill-fated The Exorcist: Believer, from Halloween reboot director David Gordon Green, although Flanaganโ€™s film wonโ€™t serve as a continuation of that project, but rather an independent story in the Exorcist universe.

While we donโ€™t really know exactly what Flanaganโ€™s Exorcist film will focus on, the Midnight Mass helmer previously spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about the project, and what exactly heโ€™s bringing to the project to make it uniquely terrifying:

โ€œWe arenโ€™t making this easy on ourselves. But Iโ€™ve always felt that thereโ€™s no point in going into a franchise or into a property that monolithic unless thereโ€™s something new you can bring. I chased The Exorcist very aggressively because I was convinced I had something that I could add. This is an opportunity to do something that I believe has never been done within the franchise โ€” something that honors what came before it but isnโ€™t built on nostalgia. I really just saw an opportunity to make the scariest movie Iโ€™ve ever made. I know expectations are high. No oneโ€™s more intimidated than I am.โ€

Jason Blum and James Wan's Blumhouse-Atomic Monster, and Morgan Creek Entertainment for Universal Pictures produceThe Exorcist, as well as Alexandra Magistro executive producing for Red Room Pictures, and David Robinson producing for Morgan Creek Entertainment.

Before The Exorcist, Ejiofor's next horror outing will be in A24's upcoming liminal thriller The Backrooms,ย where he'll star with Renate Reinsve and Creep's Mark Duplass. Flanagan is currently in post on his upcoming adaptation of Stephen King's Carrie, with the Amazon series expected for release later this year.

Look out for more onย The Exorcist as we get it, and for more, here's all the horror movies we're excited for still to come in 2026.
