A full decade after its release in 2016, supernatural horror hit Lights Out has officially scared up a sequel at New Line with a brand new writer at the helm.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, who revealed the news earlier today, Warner Bros. division has chosen up-and-comer Connor Osborne McIntyre (Animals) will pen the screenplay for Lights Out 2, with Lights Out writer and director David F. Sandberg (Until Dawn, the upcoming Amityville Horror reboot) returning to produce. James Wan's Atomic Monster will also return to produce.
Sandberg's directorial debut starred Teresa Palmer, Maria Bello, Gabriel Bateman and Alexander DiPersia, and followed the tale of a ghost entity that lives in the shadow and dark recesses of buildings as it haunts a family. The pic was based on Sandberg's genuinely terrifying 2013 short of the same name, which garnered critical acclaim following release on YouTube and Vimeo, with over 18 million views racked up on the latter as of this month.
A sequel to the feature length Lights Out was first greenlit all the way back in 2016, following the horror's box office bang, generating a worldwide total of $148.9 million, against a production budget of $4.9 million.
Per THR, plot details for Lights Out 2 are still under wraps, as is casting news, so stay tuned for updates. For more YouTube-started horror news, here's everything we know about A24's upcoming liminal horror The Backrooms.
