Hold on to your pot of gold, because Leprechaun is coming back.
Lionsgate has officially given the green light to a brand new entry in the cult comedy-horror series, with Saw IV, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark and The Collector writers Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan set to pen the screenplay.
Per Deadline, who reported the news exclusively earlier today, Oren Koules (Saw 1 – X) and Miles Koules (Spiral) are set to produce the new entry via their Koulest Productions banner. No news yet on plot details, director, or whether longtime series star Warwick Davis will return as the titular mischievous murdering fairy.
Speaking with Deadline, Oren Koules had the following to say:
“After producing all the Saw films, and twenty-three wonderful years at Lionsgate, I’m thrilled to be working again with the Lionsgate team, Patrick and Marcus, and my son, Miles, on a terrifying new way into the rich world of Leprechaun.”
This latest attempt will be Lionsgate's second at bringing Leprechaun back for the big screen following Steven Kostanski's Leprechaun Returns, a direct sequel to Mark Jones' 1993 original, from 2018.
Leprechaun Returns didn't do all too well critically or commercially, perhaps due to its release while we were at the height of the post-Hereditary metaphor horror phase, and audiences had little time for shenanigans involving slapstick kills, gold and clover juice. These days though, we're all about tongue-in-cheek ridiculousness that goes delightfully OTT. Just look at Weapons and The Substance. Perhaps now really is the perfect time for a Leprechaun comeback.
