The Mummy has once again risen from the grave, and this time, itโs nastier than ever. The first teaser trailer for Evil Dead Rise director Lee Croninโs take on the film has been released, teasing a darker, grimier, scarier version than weโve ever seen before, and revealing that the film hits theaters this spring.ย
Starring Jack Reynor and May Calamawy, Croninโs take on the creature feature classic focuses on a family broken by grief when their young daughter disappears into the desert without a trace โ only for her to return mysteriously eight years later, bringing with her a living nightmare. The film also stars Laia Costa, Natalie Grace, and Veronica Falcรณn, with Cronin directing from his own script.ย
The trailer was also accompanied by a mysterious message from Cronin, written in Morse code (and translated by our friends over at Bloody Disgusting):
โIn ancient Egyptian civilization, dark spirits and visions of the dead were never an illusion. Some that passed over were gone forever, but an unlucky few were consumed by a darkness far more evil than anyone could have ever imagined. Today it begins.โ
This version of The Mummy is just the latest in a long line of films produced under the same title, beginning with the Boris Karloff-starring film in 1932. That, of course, led to the cult classic series starring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz, which spawned two sequels (one more beloved than the other) and is rumored to be returning for another go with its beloved stars.ย
But that isnโt all โ the studio also produced numerous mummy films in the 1940s and โ50s, including The Mummyโs Hand, The Mummyโs Curse, and Abbott and Costello Meet the Mummy, because it wouldnโt be Universal without the comedic duo going up against one of their most popular monsters ever.ย
Croninโs The Mummy is produced by James Wan, Jason Blum, John Keville, Michael Clear, Judson Scott, and Macdara Kelleher, with top of the line talent behind the camera, including director of photography Dave Garbett, production designer Nick Bassett, editor Bryan Shaw, costume designer Joanna Eatwell, and more.ย
The Mummy hits theaters on April 17.
