Indonesian horror Pabrik Gula (Sugar Mill) has been acquired for a North American theatrical release, including IMAX screens, this April by Los Angeles-based sales, production, and finance company EST N8, Deadline reports.

The supernatural horror is directed by Awi Suryadi, the filmmaker behind the highest-grossing Indonesian film of all time, KKN di Desa Penari, a horror based on a viral Twitter thread turned novel.

Per Deadline, Arbani Yasiz (Winter Elegy, Azzamine) stars in the film, alongside Erika Carlina (The Devilโ€™s Bride, Sleep Call) and Ersya Aurelia (Killers, Anak Jalanan: A New Beginning).

In Pabrik Gula:

The film follows a group of seasonal workers arriving at a sugar mill, only to find themselves tormented by vengeful demons. As terrifying events unfold, they must unravel the mystery of what awakened these dark forces โ€” and whether they can escape and return home before it is too late.

Deadline also note that Pabrik Gula will have its theatrical release in Indonesia at the end of March to coincide with Eid al-Fitr festival.

Here's what Ma, chairman of EST Studios has to say of the acquisition:

โ€œThe EST N8 team is ecstatic about collaborating with MD Pictures on Pabrik Gula […] We canโ€™t wait to introduce audiences to the rich world of Pabrik Gula, a film that will surely resonate with fans of supernatural horror.โ€

Pabrik Gula joins the recent wave of the Indonesian horror renaissance, with directors like Joko Anwar, Timo Tjahjanto and Kimo Stamboel being some of the biggest names in the genre.
