We recently brought eager horror fans the news that the popular documentary series In Search of Darkness was returning to tackle a new decade. The series has previously covered horror in the '80s and '90s, this next installment will transport fans to the 1970s.
The comprehensive long-format documentary series has been nominated for multiple FANGORIA Chainsaw Awards for Best Documentary Feature and has garnered a reputation for rounding up some of the most notable voices in the genre. Today, we're getting a full reveal of the official poster art.
The new poster by artist Dave Merrell highlights '70s horror juggernauts The Exorcist, Halloween, Amityville Horror, The Omen, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Jaws, Blacula, and The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. Take a look at the full scene:

Is that a glimpse of Phantom of the Paradise partially obscured on the marquee? The New York Post sandwich board in the foreground provides a little Easter egg nod to Hitchcock's 1972 film, Frenzy, and you may also spot a recognizable creature poking out of the baby carriage (It's Alive)! That sure looks an awful lot like the Tall Man casually reading a Phantasm ad in the paper.
If you look closer, you may also spot the human-faced dog from 1978's Invasion of the Body Snatchers, and some familiar folks patiently waiting in line for the movie theater.
The In Search of Darkness team of writer/director David Weiner and executive producer Robin Block have “set their sights on the cinematic, revolutionary, and influential decade, a golden era that spawned unmatched horror creativity and defined how we'd look at the genre for the next 50 years.”
Writer/director David Weiner shared”I'm absolutely thrilled to be revisiting the most formative decade in my life for the newest In Search of Darkness documentary. Growing up as a kid in the '70s, I was exposed to all sorts of monster movies, creature features, and straight-out horror on our wood-paneled den TV and in the 99-cent movie theater down the street.
From watching such films as The Exorcist, The Omen, Phantasm, Alien, and Halloween at way too young an age, I essentially imprinted on horror. For In Search of Darkness '70s, we are assembling a murderer's row of knowledgeable and recognizable talent to both celebrate and recontextualize this golden era of filmmaking, and I can't wait to share it with our hungry horror community.”
