A remake of the 1999 horror-comedy cult classic Idle Hands is in development over at Sony Pictures, Variety has revealed today.
Stranger Thing‘s Finn Wolfhard and Billy Bryk have signed on to write, and are apparently also being eyed to direct the remake, with Jason Reitman (Jennifer's Body, Ghostbusters: Afterlife) set to produce.
Rodman Flender's original Idle Hands starred Devon Sawa, Jessica Alba, Seth Green and Vivica A. Fox. The film followed average lazy stoner teenager, Anton Tobias (Sawa), whose hand becomes possessed and goes on a killing spree, even after being cut off from his arm.
If they do sign on to direct, Idle Hands will mark Wolfhard and Bryk's second feature, following the upcoming Hell of a Summer, which NEON plans to release in 2025.
Idle Hands will of course also mark a reunion between the pair and Reitman, as both starred in 2021's Ghostbusters: Afterlife, and Wolfhard appearing in Reitman's latest, Saturday Night Life.
While the original Idle Hands didn't generate a whole lot of positive attention at the time of its release (grossing just $4 million from a budget of $20-25 million), it has since gone on to become a cult classic beloved for its nostalgia factor and stoner humor.
It'll be interesting to see where Wolfhard and Bryk take the project for a new era, especially given Wolfhard's comments on how his generation are represented in the media.
Whatever the case, we'll be watching this Idle Hands remake closely. Keep your eyes peeled!
