Anyone who's ever watched a video of a hippopotamus crushing a watermelon effortlessly in its mouth should know how terrifying those slobbery MFs are. Why they're not the subject of more horror movies is a mystery, frankly, but they're definitely in Hungry, the upcoming creature feature thriller written and directed by James Nunn (One Shot trilogy)
Per Deadline, who released a first look at the pic today (seen above), Hungry stars Madison Davenport (Sharp Objects), and centers on a group of holidaymakers who must fight for their lives against a rampaging hippo after becoming lost in the Louisiana swamplands.
Also starring are Joaquim de Almeida (Road House), Tracey Bonner (The Exorcism), Jim Meskimen (Apollo 13), Samantha Coughlan (Damage), Olivia Bernstone (Mood) Michel Curiel (She Hulk: Attorney At Law) and River Codack (Under the Bridge).
As for that title? Well, those of us of a certain age might catch the connection. Let's just hope Hasbro turns a blind eye.
Hungry is the latest in the recent renaissance of animal attack genre pics, joining Johannes Roberts' Primate, the recent Anaconda reboot starring Jack Black and Paul Rudd, Netflix's Cujo remake, Morihito Inoueโs horror-comedy Hot Spring Shark Attack and its upcoming sequel, Dangerous Animals,ย the Justin Long-starring Coyotes, and Tina Romero's just-announced “big gay shark horror movie“, Jawline, to name but a few.
Look out for more onย Hungry as we get it, and for more, here's all the monster movies we're excited for still to come in 2026.
