Headquartered in Pittsburgh, where many of his films were made, The George A. Romero Foundation is a non-profit committed to honoring the life of the Night of the Living Dead director by preserving and supporting the work of independent filmmakers. They strive to do as much as they can for those inspired by Romeroโs work, and this year, theyโre highlighting the work of women in film with their campaign Scream Like a Girl.ย
To celebrate Womenโs History Month, the foundation (GARF for short) is dedicating the entire month of March to honoring female filmmakers, writers, actresses, producers, and creators. The campaign will be headlined on their social media, where each week theyโll be highlighting women whose influence changed horror with in-depth profiles and special content. Members of the horror community can nominate women whose work they believe deserves recognition by posting on social media with the hashtag #WIHScreamLikeaGirl.
Theyโll also be hosting a new short film contest focused on the work of female and nonbinary creators, with filmmakers able to submit their horror films, art, writing, and music, with a Blackmagic Design Pocket Pro Camera 6k being awarded to the best overall film. This is accompanied by a virtual panel on March 20 with the winners, moderated by Romeroโs daughter and Queens of the Dead director Tina Romero.ย
The GARF will also be releasing limited-edition Women In Horror merchandise, featuring an original design from their artist in residence, Ryan Carr, The design will be printed on everything from t-shirts and hoodies to posters and mugs, available exclusively through the non-profit.
