With an Oscar nomination under his belt, Wagner Moura is turning his attention to horror. Deadline reports that the star of The Secret Agent has signed on to star in Flesh of the Gods, a new vampire thriller from A24 and Mandy director Panos Cosmatos.

Moura is set to star alongside Kristen Stewart in the new film — he replaces Oscar Isaac, who exited the project over scheduling conflicts. The film, directed by Cosmatos and written by Andrew Kevin Walker, follows “Raoul (Moura) and Alex (Stewart), a married couple in glittering ’80s Los Angeles who descend each evening from their luxury skyscraper condo and head into an electric nighttime realm. When they cross paths with the mysterious and enigmatic Nameless and her hard-partying cabal, Raoul and Alex are seduced into a glamorous, surrealistic world of hedonism, thrills and violence.”

Flesh of the Gods will be Cosmatos’ first film since Mandy was released in 2018, bringing his work back to the big screen nearly a decade later. (It’s worth noting, however, that he did direct an episode of Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities for Netflix in 2022.)

The film is Moura’s first to be announced since his Academy Award nomination, which made him the first Brazilian ever to be nominated for Best Actor, as well as the first Brazilian to win an acting Golden Globe and the Cannes Best Actor prize. He’s also set to star in 11817 alongside Greta Lee, a sci-fi horror film coming to Netflix this year.

Flesh of the Gods is produced by Stewart, Adam McKay, Betsy Koch, Jonas Katzenstein, Maximilian Leo, and Maggie McLean. The film will be distributed in the US by A24, with XYZ Films handling international sales.
