New York Times bestselling author Daniel Kraus (Whalefall, Creepshow, The Living Dead) is diving into one of the most iconic movies of all time with Partially Devoured, a new book billed as the ultimate deep-dive into George A. Romero's seminal 1968 zombie horror Night of the Living Dead – and we're excited to reveal the cover exclusively today.
Anyone familiar with Kraus will know he has the chops to back up the claims that Partially Devoured is the ultimate Night of the Living Dead analysis with a personal twist, having seen the film at just five years old and continuing a lifelong obsession all the way through to completing Romero's unfinished novel The Living Dead in 2017 after the legendary filmmaker passed away, as well as co-authoring Romero's other half-finished novel Pay the Piper.
Per an official press release, Partially Devoured examines Night of the Living Dead‘s importance to our history, culture, and psychology, creating a perfect blend of research and memoir in the vein of Quentin Tarantino’s Cinema Speculation:
Partially Devoured uses a frame-by-frame deep dive into Night of the Living Dead to produce a kaleidoscopic cultural investigation of the film’s importance and to examine the author’s early life of rural isolation and local violence. Careening from film analysis to rabbit-hole tangents, Partially Devoured will take readers from screaming laughter to the depths of grief, all while illustrating how a beloved genre film has woven itself into so many facets of our lives.
Speaking exclusively to FANGORIA, Kraus had the following to say of his own personal history with the film:
“I have been training to write this book since I was five years old and saw Night of the Living Dead for the first time. For forty-five years, the film has fascinated me and the more I learned of the backstory, the more amazed I became.
