Japanese horror stories have really gained a foothold with Western audiences recently — just look at the success of Chainsaw Man in theaters. They’ve gained as much notoriety as any Jordan Peele or Zach Cregger project, which means it’s the perfect time for Titan Manga to release Eko Eko Azarak Reborn, a reimagining of a classic horror manga that you can catch a sneak preview of here, only from FANGORIA.

Eko Eko Azarak was originally created in 1975 by Shinichi Koda, with a classic run that continued through 1979 and spawned numerous spinoffs and adaptations. As of now, the Japanese franchise features six live-action films, two J-drama TV shows, and an animated film. Now, the manga is being brought back to life for the first time in nearly fifty years.

Written and illustrated by Yamada J-ta and spanning a whopping two hundred and eight pages, Eko Eko Azarak Reborn’s synopsis is as follows:

Eko Eko Azarak Reborn brings the terrifying world of witchcraft, demons, and dark magic back to life in this chilling remake of the 1975-79 classic. Misa Kuroi, a powerful witch awakened by humanity’s darkest desires, is summoned by a mysterious stranger and sent on a harrowing journey into Hell. Facing both her dark past and Lucifer himself, Misa must confront unimaginable horrors and unlock her true power to survive. This first volume sets the stage for a nightmarish battle against the forces of Hell, demons, and black magic, as Misa embarks on a quest to rescue her sister and face her destiny.

This isn’t the first time Yamada has reimagined a Japanese classic into a new manga, either. His previous work includes King’s Game: Origin, an adaptation of Nobuaki Kanazawa’s mobile phone novel of the same name, and he also worked on the popular manga Supernatural Power Maze with Shinichi Okada.
