Dark Horse Comics' cosmic horror series Dead Mall is set for a big screen adaptation with FANGORIA Chainsaw Award directer Michael Varrati (There's a Zombie Outside) on script duties.
The four-issue series, from Clown in a Cornfield‘s Adam Cesare and artist David Stoll has been optioned by production company Not the Funeral Home, and follows five teens who sneak into their local mall for one last look before it’s demolished, only to discover the mall is far from abandoned:
Inside the crumbling retail labyrinth, they encounter a sprawling, ever-changing cosmic horror that has made the mall its home, transforming the familiar consumer temple into a nightmarish maze where survival is anything but guaranteed.
Per an official press release, Varrati will draw from Cesare’s original story notes that include previously unseen material, meaning comic fans can expect to see even more of the Dark Mall world than previously put to page.
Matt Manjourides, co-founder of Not The Funeral Home (whose other projects include The Last Drive In With Joe Bob Briggs, as well as films like Street Trash and Black Eyed Susan) alongside Justin Martell, describes Dead Mall as “Event Horizon and Hellraiser in a mall”, which should be enough to sell you even without all the other cool news surrounding this new pic.
Varrati has been busy lately, with Dead Mall adding to his recently produced and directed new online miniseries Camp Crystal Legacy for Paramount Scares, as well as an upcoming queer horror anthology titled Four Seasons of Fear.
Look out for more on Dead Mall as we get it.
