Vietnamese vampire thriller Daydreamers hits U.S. theaters on May 2 and Digital on June 3, with Dark Star Pictures unleashing a new trailer for you to sink your fangs into.
From Sundance Award-winning filmmaker Timothy Linh Bui (Three Seasons, Green Dragon), Daydreamers stars singer and actress Chi Pu, as well as rising talents Trinh Thao, Thuan Nguyen, and Tran Ngoc Vang.
An official plot synopsis reads:
Four hundred years ago, vampires fled Europe and settled in Indochina, only to be hunted down until few remained. To survive undetected, the remaining vampires created a strict law: โKill no humans unless they know.โ In present-day Saigon, NHAT, a young vampire, lives among the Daydreamers, a secluded community that believes suppressing their thirst for human blood may one day restore their humanity. But when his long-lost brother, MARCO, returns with tales of vampires thriving among humans, Nhat is tempted by a freer existence.
He breaks his motherโs dying promise and follows Marco into the glamorous nightlife of Saigon, where he meets HA, a rebellious schoolgirl who stumbles upon his secret– defying the vampire law. Nhat develops a connection, thus chooses to protect her. But their escape is complicated by TRIEU, Marcoโs ruthless vampire queen, who orders their execution. As chaos eruptsโthe Daydreamers exposed, the city turning against themโNhat and Marco face off in a final, heartbreaking battle. One brother embraces the monster within, while the other fights to hold on to his last shred of humanity.
One of the first ever Vietnamese vampire horror films, Daydreamers‘ release coincides with the start of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, an important facet as director Bui expands on:
โI wanted to tell a story about people who live within the shadows of a modern city […] I was inspired by the Vietnamese riverboat communities, who have been there for decades and are overlooked by those around them. As the ultimate outsiders, vampires are the perfect vehicle to explore that world. They exist in secrecy, live on the margins, and are defined by their need to remain hidden.โ
