Scream king Dan Stevens (The Guest, Cuckoo, Adam Wingard's upcoming Onslaught) is set to play a sci-fi icon as the titular cyborg of Prime Video's upcoming Robocop series.
Per Deadline, Stevens will star as Alex Murphy and his robotic alter ego (played in the original Paul Verhoeven film by Peter Weller) in the new show. Showrunner and writer Peter Ocko is at the helm, as well as genre giant Blumhouse Atomic Monster.
In the eight-episode Robocop series, a giant tech conglomerate convinces the city to place a powerful robot on its police force – a robot implanted with the consciousness of a beloved, fallen officer.
As Deadline reminds, the Robocop series was first reported back in 2023 as part of a first batch of MGM titles identified for series development following Amazon’s 2022 acquisition of the studio.
MGM Studios’ Head of Global TV Peter Friedlander calls the new Robocop series “a vision that honors the soul of what made the original so enduring while building something entirely fresh and urgent for today”, while horror titan and executive producer James Wan (Saw, The Conjuring) teases the series' “contemporary take on “technology, identity, and who corporations really serve”.
1987's Robocop kickstarted a series followed up by two sequels, RoboCop 2 in 1990 and RoboCop 3 in 1993. In 2014, José Padilha rebooted the series with a remake starring Joel Kinnaman.
