After months of speculation about the future of the franchise, we finally have a lead on the next installment in the Texas Chainaaw Massacre series. Variety reports that A24 has tapped Obsession director Curry Barker to direct their upcoming reboot of Tobe Hooper’s horror classic, just weeks before his sophomore film hits theaters.
According to Variety, the film is being billed as a “reimagining” of the film that sparked an iconic slasher franchise, though details on what exactly that entails are being kept under wraps. The new film will be produced by Roy Lee, Steven Schneider, Stuart Manashil, Pat Cassidy, Ian Henkel, and original Texas Chain Saw Massacre co-writer Kim Henkel.
A24 won the rights to the film franchise from Verve, who’ve owned said rights since 2017, in a heated battle last year. Barker’s film is one of two Texas Chainsaw projects currently in development, alongside a television series produced by Glen Powell under his Barnstorm banner, with Strange Darling’s JT Mollner attached to direct.

The new film will serve as Barker’s fourth feature film, following up on Obsession and his current work on Anything But Ghosts, a new Blumhouse film about paranormal investigators that he’s directing, co-writing, and starring in. (Phew!) He made his feature debut with Milk & Serial in 2024, which was made for $800 and was released for free on YouTube.
This new Texas Chainsaw film begins development four years after the last installment in the franchise arrived on Netflix in 2022. Texas Chainsaw Massacre (yes, there’s nine of them and they all sound the same) was directed by David Blue Garcia and starred Sarah Yarkin and Elsie Fisher, though reviews were generally negative. Here’s hoping Barker will infuse some new life — or death? — into the franchise.
No release date has been announced for the new Texas Chainsaw Massacre film. Stay tuned to FANGORIA for more updates.
