Despite the cult success of Coralie Fargeatโs most recent film, The Substance โ including netting a Golden Globe for lead actress Demi Moore โ the director has no plans to return to the filmโs world of beauty industry-fueled body horror. In a new interview with Variety, she gave very vague details about plans for her next film, but one thing was clear: sheโs not interested in prequels or sequels.
โThe point of this movie is to bring fresh things to the world,โ she said to the outlet. โNo sequels, no prequels. Iโm going to be so happy to bring something else fresh to the world in a bit.โ She wasnโt very forthcoming with details about the next project she has planned, but clearly, itโs going to be a totally different ballgame than the cult hit.
โFor now Iโm not discussing anything. Iโm just enjoying the moment and taking some time as I really want to write my next project,โ she told Variety. โItโs slowly starting to be put in motion in the back of my brain and when things calm down Iโll take it from there. Itโs going to be totally different [than The Substance] but with a lot of similarities. I love to make bold and surprising films with things that you donโt expect, so definitely thatโs what I want to do. And I love the freedom that I gave myself for this film and thatโs certainly something I want to keep doing.โ
Regardless of where Fargeat takes her career next, thereโs no denying that sheโs made an indelible mark on Hollywood, and not just with horror fans. The Substance earned $78 million at the box office despite a more limited run than standard blockbusters, and is now, post-Golden Globes, a part of the Academy Awards buzz circling around ahead of nominations on January 17. Whether it will net a nomination (or multiple) is anyoneโs guess, but for now, it seems like Fargeat knows exactly what she wants to do next โ and weโre ready for it.
The Substance is streaming now on MUBI.
