The long-rumored Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot is ever closer to becoming a reality, with TVLine today reporting some alleged juicy new details from the upcoming Hulu series.
As previously reported, Oscar winner Chloรฉ Zhao (Nomadland, Eternals) is set to direct and produce the Buffy reboot, with Nora Zuckerman and Lila Zuckerman (Poker Face) attached to write, showrun, and executive produce.
Original series lead Sarah Michelle Gellar is said to be reprising her titular role as a recurring guest star, but will not lead the show. Per the prophecy, a new Slayer will take up the mantle, one that's apparently “more Willow than Buffy”, TVLine claim.
Willow Rosenberg, played by Alyson Hannigan throughout Joss Whedon's original Buffy series, became a fan-favorite beloved for her nerdy traits and shyness, contrasting with Buffy's kick-ass confidence.
Here's the full scoop:
Per preliminary and subject-to-change intel, sheโs a cerebral 16-year-old named Nova (though weโre fairly certain that name is just a placeholder) who is very smart and a bit of a loner. Her buddies, aka those who wouldโve been considered the โScoobiesโ in the original series, will include Hugo, an out-and-proud nerd who comes from money, and Gracie, a young expert on vampires whoโs an acolyte of Gellarโs Buffy.
Casting is reportedly currently underway on all three roles.
Now, take these details with a pinch of salt, because TVLine also report that representatives for Hulu and 20th Television declined to comment.
Back in February, Gellar took to Instagram to promise fans that “we will only make this show if we know we can do it right. And I will tell you that we are on the path there.”
Executive producing the Buffy series alongside the Zuckermans and Zhao are Fran Kuzui and Kaz Kuzui via Suite B, and Dolly Parton who will executive produce via Sandollar. 20th Television and Searchlight Television will produce.
Look out for more on the Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot as we get it.
