Three years after winning a Chainsaw Award for their debut feature film Alone With You, directors Emily Bennett and Justin Brooks are back with another, bloodier story to tell. Dark Sky Films released the trailer for Blood Shine, a new religious horror film that pits a diehard horror fan against some truly biblical evil.
Bennett and Brooks co-write and direct the film, which Bennett also stars in alongside David Call, Brendan Sexton III, Toby Poser, Kyle Minshew, Maurice P. Kerry, and genre legend Larry Fessenden. The film’s synopsis is as follows:
Set in a desolate expanse of upstate New York, Blood Shine centers around Clara, a religious zealot who worships light in lonely, sacred rituals. When problematic horror director Brighton West travels upstate to finish the screenplay for his next film, a chance encounter with Clara leads him into an hallucinatory web of faith, flesh, and the sublime.
Blood Shine is produced by Alexander Schepsman, Zeus Kontoyannis, Garrett Fennelly, Aaron Koontz, and Ashleigh Snead. While this is only Bennett’s second turn as a director, she’s also appeared in films like Trauma, or Monsters All, The Mortuary Assistant, and Shelby Oaks, while Brooks is primarily known for his work as a television cinematographer.
“We are thrilled to bring Blood Shine to North American audiences,” said Dark Sky’s Greg Newman when they acquired the film in February. “Emily Bennett and Justin Brooks have created a daring and visually arresting film that expands the boundaries of folk horror and really delivers.”
Blood Shine hits theaters and VOD on August 21.
