Charlie Brooker's dystopian sci-fi series has officially been greenlit for an eighth season at Netflix, making it one of the streamerโs longest-running shows.
Per Brooker, speaking with Netflix's Tudum site earlier today,ย Black Mirror Season 8 is currently being written, with the hope that “itโll be more Black Mirror than ever”:
โI can confirm thatย Black Mirror will return, just in time for reality to catch up with it. So, thatโs exciting. That chunk of my brain has already been activated and is whirring away.โ
Created by Brooker and inspired by The Twilight Zone, Black Mirror premiered in 2011 originally on the UK's Channel 4 before making the switch to Netflix in 2016. The show has covered everything from robot bees to cloned pop stars, exploring the collective anxieties and unease of 21st-century living. And as we delve deeper and deeper into the darker aspects of technology, scarily, it only seems to become even more relevant with each passing year.

Past directors ofย Black Mirror episodes include Jodie Foster (“Arkangel”), Dan Trachtenberg (“Playtest”) and James Watkins (“Shut Up and Dance”),ย with stars including Bryce Dallas Howard, Daniel Kaluuya, Wyatt Russell, Jesse Plemons, Josh Hartnett, Salma Hayek, Zazie Beetz, Benedict Wong, Cristin Milioti, Wunmi Mosaku and Paul Giamatti, to name but a few.
As for what the new series has in store, Brooker teases that the eight season ofย Black Mirror will explore new territory, while also retaining the same ideas we've come to know and, weirdly, love:
Itโs a useful thought experiment when approaching a new story. Iโll often think of, โWell, what havenโt we done yet, and what tone am I looking for? โฆ Where does this track come on the album, and what musical direction are we going to go into?โ Weโll find out. Very unlikely youโll ever see a Black Mirror hoedown.
More's the pity, in that regard. Look out for more on Black Mirror Season 8 as we get it, and for more, here's our pick for the top 15 horror television shows of 2025.
