Following the recent unexpected but exciting news that Takashi Miike is teaming up with Charli XCX for a mysterious feature, Deadline has revealed that the Japanese genre maestro is also teaming up with NEON for Bad Lieutenant: Tokyo

Based on Abel Ferrera's Bad Lieutenant starring Harvey Keitel, IP produced by Edward R. Pressman, the thriller will star Shun Oguri (Godzilla v. Kong, No Longer Human), Lily James (Pam and Tommy, Yesterday), and WWE star Liv Morgan (Chucky).

Per Deadline:

Bad Lieutenant: Tokyo will follow the Bad Lieutenant (Oguri), a corrupt gambler in the Metropolitan Police Force, who finds himself thrown into a tangled case after an enigmatic FBI agent (James) arrives in Tokyo to investigate the disappearance of a politicianโ€™s daughter (Morgan). Meanwhile, a deviant killer operating in the yakuza underworld seems to be shadowing their moves.

Daisuke Tengan (13 Assassins) wrote the pic, with producers including Jeremy Thomas for Recorded Picture Company, Sam Pressman for Pressman Film, Naoaki Kitajima for Nippon TV and Misako Saka for OLM.

In a statement, Miike, who has blessed the genre world with hyper-gory classics like Audition and Ichi the Killer, had this to say of his take on Bad Lieutenant:

โ€œA team of incredibly talented actors and crew has gathered in Tokyo. Now. Iโ€™m about to throw a fastball straight down the middle of your strike zone โ€“ no tricks, no gimmicks. Iโ€™m confident we are about to break through every limit, to create unforgettable entertainment. Get ready for the ride with us,โ€

Thomas adds:

โ€œWeโ€™re all delighted to reinterpret this iconic IP with a master filmmaker like Takashi Miike,โ€ said producer Jeremy Thomas of Recorded Picture Company. โ€œWeโ€™ve produced 10 films in Japan, most recently Grand Maison Paris, which has grossed over $28M domestically, and itโ€™s a fertile place to create and distribute films. I feel the time is right for this irreverent hybrid.โ€

Ferrera's Bad Lieutenant was followed by a sequel, Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans, from Werner Herzog in 2009.

Deadline note that NEON will release the film theatrically in North America and represent the international sales rights in Cannes this month. Look out for more on Bad Lieutenant: Tokyo as we get it!
