With a real-life virus making everyone wary of the produce section, it seems like now is the perfect time for Attack of the Killer Tomatoes to make a comeback. The franchise that began with the cult classic 1978 film is expanding into graphic novel territory, and FANGORIA has some exclusive details on the upcoming book.
Written by Kevin Cuffe and Bob Frantz, with art by Bobby Timony and covers by Tim Seeley and Bob Fingerman, the new graphic novel clocks in at over a hundred pages, and features an additional anthology of short stories, pin-ups and more from a host of writers and artists, including, as we can exclusively reveal, original Killer Tomatoes creator Costa Dillon. The Book’s synopsis is as follows:
In the year 2045, the human race is on the brink of extinction after decades of fighting Dr. Gangreen’s army of mutant killer tomatoes. Alexander, a brave soldier in what remains of the human resistance, volunteers for a dangerous mission: go back in time to the year 2026 and take out Gangreen before he can unleash his ultimate tomato-based plans for world domination!
“This will be the first time there has been a graphic novel based on the Attack of the Killer Tomatoes, and it's about time!” Dillon said. “When I talked to people about the original film, back in the 1980s, people who had not seen it often assumed it was an animated film. That made me think that it was a concept ripe (!) for a graphic novel or comic. I am pleased that we are finally underway to make this a reality.
“My anthology story follows the further adventures of Wilbur Finletter: Killer Tomato Hunter. The Wilbur Finletter we see in the movies and cartoon is only part of his history. Whether acting alone or with his colleagues, Finletter has been a guardian against the marauding red (and sometimes yellow, green, or purple) menace. Humankind has little knowledge of the instrumental role Wilbur has played in keeping us safe in the produce aisle. The graphic novel is an opportunity to reveal the larger Finletter story so that the public can fully appreciate what this unsung hero has done for us all.
Attack of the Killer Tomatoes will also have a presence at this week’s San Diego Comic Con, with PANICK Entertainment hosting a panel featuring Timony and producer Michael Polis, as well as a panel dedicated to the franchise’s upcoming film, Attack of the Killer Tomatoes: Organic Intelligence.
