The great Anne Hathaway (The Dark Knight Rises, the upcoming Devil Wears Prada 2, Mother Mary) has a request for us, and, horror fans, who are we to deny her?
Back in 2017, Hathaway made a jump into monster movies with a role in Nacho Vigalondo's Colossal, a South Korea-set kaiju movie that, sadly, had a hard time making a name for itself upon release, and thus has mostly been forgotten, even among the most hardcore of genre fans. Hathaway has taken to her official Instagram account (seen below) to let people know that Colossal is now streaming on Netflix, giving audiences a chance to check out this would-be cult classic.
Despite boasting a stellar cast aside from Hathaway, with Jason Sudeikis and scream king Dan Stevens (The Guest, Cuckoo) also starring, Colossal bombed at the box office following its world premiere at Toronto International Film Festival, generating just $4.5 million globally off a budget of $15 million.
While you may be looking at Colossal‘s credentials now and thinking “how the hell did a NEON genre pic starring an Oscar-winner like Hathaway do so poorly?” Well, remember that back in 2017, long before Parasite, Longlegs and Anora, NEON was far from the production powerhouse we know and love today. As NEON's debut pic, Colossal just didn't have the clout behind it yet.
Colossal also checks in at a meaty 82% positive critic review score on Rotten Tomatoes, although audiences were more mixed. However, it's hard not to already be sold by the premise of Colossal, even if you're still on the fence about checking it out. The black comedy sci-fi pic follows an unemployed writer (Hathaway) who unwittingly manifests a giant creature in Seoul while struggling with alcoholism and an abusively controlling colleague. How can you not be sold, frankly?
As Hathaway reminds, Colossal is now streaming on Netflix, and given that we're all doing nostalgia for a decade ago, there's no better time to check it out. Give it a go while you prepare for the other horror monster movies we're excited for still to come in 2026.
