While Tobe Hooper’s original reigns supreme over all the slashers in the land, the makers behind the Texas Chain Saw Massacre game are highlighting a different take on our beloved Leatherface. They’ve just announced that their latest cosmetic skin (no pun intended) is “2003 Leatherface,” aka the version of the character from the early aughts remake of the film, starring Jessica Biel.
The new skin is based on the design originally created by effects artist Scott Stoddard, featuring a mask with multiple layers of skin sewn together with leather cord, as well as different kinds of skin to give Leatherface the appearance of a taxidermist. He also features, appropriately, a brand new chainsaw.
“Assisting with the reference design of 2003 Leatherface was one of my biggest thrills in my three years at Gun,” said community representative Andy Cleves. “Scouring through screenshots, working closely with our design team and the talented folks at Art Bully Productions was a total blast for this lifelong horror nerd. This look of Leatherface is arguably one of his most menacing so it was of utmost importance to get every detail of the mask and outfit where it needed to be. We hope players enjoy the love that was put into this new Leatherface skin coming to The Texas Chain Saw Massacre.”
The Texas Chain Saw Massacre game was released in 2023, and features online matches (similar to Dead by Daylight) where players must work together to survive the killers. Horror icon Barbara Crampton was also recently added to the game as a DLC, and the price for the game as a whole was recently steeply discounted. The official description of the game reads as follows:
“Take on the role of one of the notorious Slaughter family, or their victims, in The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, a third-person asymmetrical horror experience based on the groundbreaking and iconic 1974 horror film.
As a victim you must use your wits and stealth to stay out of the Family's reach and find the tools you need to lead to your eventual freedom. Slaughter Family players must seek out, track down, and stop their guests from escaping. Players of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre can finally find out if they have what it takes to survive.”
Content Pass holders for The Texas Chain Saw Massacre game will automatically unlock the new 2003 Leatherface, and non-passholders will be able to purchase the skin for $6.99 USD on January 28.
